Who are the Friends of Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra?
Any person or organisation who wishes to show their support of the Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra can become a Friend. Many of our Friends have supported us over many years, and their continuing contribution is particularly appreciated.

Why become a Friend?
Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra is self-funding through membership subscriptions, concert income and support from the Friends. We do not receive any support from local authorities. Support from the Friends is therefore vital in enabling us to perform classical music to a high standard.

Benefits
A WPO Friend receives the following benefits:
-
Newsletters and information updates from the Orchestra
-
The option of being named in the concert programmes as a Friend
-
£1 discount on a single ticket for each concert when purchased at the Box Office
-
Invitations to occasional special functions
How do I become a Friend?
Membership of the Friends is an annually renewable subscription for the October-June concert season.
The suggested contribution is £20 for an individual, a couple or a household, or £40 for a business or commercial enterprise. However, we welcome any contribution from Friends, and these amounts are for guidance only.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings, from 19:15 to 21:30, although this is sometimes extended by anything up to half an hour, with advance notice. Full attendance is expected, and woodwind, brass and percussion players are required to arrange deputies if unable to attend.
Rehearsals, including sectionals, take place mostly at the Worthing Assembly Hall . A final pre-concert day rehearsal is occasionally added on a Friday evening, with all regular concerts taking place on Sundays, typically at 3pm, preceded by a three-hour rehearsal. There are usually five or six major concerts during a season, with extra public events taking place from time to time.

It is your responsibility to do your best to get your music to a rehearsal if you are unable to attend. We hire most parts, and do not have spare copies.

Concert Dress

For most concerts, this comprises long black for ladies and and an all-black outfit for gentlemen. At our Christmas concert the usual attire is bright-coloured dresses/tops for ladies and white shirts with coloured bow ties for men.

Subscription Fees 2024/25

All members are required to pay an annual subscription which helps fund the orchestra’s costs.
You should fit in to one of the following four categories:
-
Pay for the year at £192.00 by October 1st, at the latest;
-
Pay three installments of £64, by October 1st, January 1st, and March 1st. (You are expected to set up the 2nd and 3rd payments by standing order to save the Subscriptions Secretary having to chase subs three times);
-
Students in full time education – free;
-
Speak in confidence to a member of the WPO finance committee if you are in a position of financial hardship and cannot afford to pay the full amount.

Our subscription year begins in September. If you join part way through the year, payment can be arranged pro-rata by term (not by concert), by agreement with a member of the WPO finance committee.

Payment can be made online, via the members' section of this website, or by cheque, cash and online bank transfer.
